Worlds Greatest DJ continued...

Here are 2 animation test i put together to figure out what it would take to to animate a DJ. I counted how many frames it took to do one full scratch motion while paying attention to his head and bobbing it at the same time. Also, i had to figure out how to time his "record" hand movement and play it against his crossfader hand. The test with the stickfas character was done a few times cause his fingers kept falling off, or id forget to bob his head mid-animation but once i had all the information in place and an x-sheet drawn out, i was able to do this final test with all the parts working together.

This second test was done out of excitement for having a metal turntable to use in the shot. This is the turntable that Joe put together and i made a quick second one out of pink foam just to get to the testing. I didnt do much planning for this test, just kind of jumped in just to see what would happen. I did use the x-sheet timing from the other test so i could at least get the scratching right. Everything else was dictated by the audio that i got from the 13 year old DJ, Dj powertripp.

Back in 2007, I saw a video on youtube of a young boy (about 13 years old) djing and scratching on turntables. I subscribed to the account and watched all of this guys videos. I got the idea to do a little stop motion piece about a robot DJ who used batteries (skills) to get better at scratching and turntablism. I got in contact with the account holder, who ended up being the boys dad, and asked if i could use the audio to put together a quick test. He allowed it and also asked if his son could put together a video for the film. "Out of the crystal clear blue", hadn't even shot anything yet. Found out that his son was into stop motion so i told him about software and stikfas and he delivered a video of his son doing some dope scratching on the 1's and 2's. I started storyboarding, did a few test and began designing and putting together massive sets for this short film.

Highmark "Accepted" Commercial

A week before i moved to San Francisco, I was able to work on these pretty cool Highmark commercials.
I was surprised that i was able to keep a level head working on this piece with such a big production team, and spending my nights throwing my bed out of the window and packing everything i could fit into my car. It was a great experience and I met a ton of really talented people on the set.  The hardest thing i had to animate( with the help of Dave Arnold) was the arrow sequence you see at the end of the commercials. I dont think that sequence is on this one but there were 6 commercials shot in that week and alot of the animation i did was scattered throughout the commercials. Hope to do more of this kind of animation in the future.
